Fiona and Danny struggle to overcome their families' pasts and be together after a chance meeting in post-Troubles Belfast, Northern Ireland. Fiona has lived in the U.S. with her mother since she was two, and now she has reconnected with her father and brothers. Danny strives to escape his violent and abusive life and help people by becoming a nurse in the army. Fiona and Danny find common ground in their difficult family relationships, but secrets in their respective families' pasts may be what drives them apart. The main characters' problematic lives are set against the backdrop of the religious tensions in Northern Ireland. Similar to Katie McGarry's Say You'll Remember Me (2018), Carlson's debut features characters with stark religious differences and histories that must be overcome. Once readers adjust to the narrative told in alternating perspectives and Americans get comfortable with the Irish slang they will find an endearing story full of pain, love, and strength.--Savannah Patterson Copyright 2019 Booklist
